Shadow of the Turning at Center for Art in Wood

Arts & Theater If you're into art that cannot be easily described in 25 words or less, you'll be into "Shadow of the Turning" at The Center for Art in Wood, a decidedly different downtown Philadelphia museum. This traveling exhibition, which combines the unique art, storytelling, and philosophy of Vietnamese-American artist Binh Pho, runs from October 25, 2013 through January 18, 2014. Visitors will be treated to a fascinating fictional story that brings together a variety of styles, from adventure and fantasy to fairy tale and science fiction, to create a tale that focuses on both the natural world and Asian culture. As for the artwork itself, it utilizes sculpture, glass, painting, and wood turning.

There will be an opening reception for the exhibit on October 25 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. An hour and a half into the reception, at 6:30, there will be a gallery talk by Binh Pho. The following day, October 26, he will be at the museum from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. to sign books and to share insights into his work and his exploration of mythic worlds as well as his life. He escaped from Vietnam in 1979 at the age of 24 and attended Devry University in Kansas City, Missouri, where he earned a B.S. degree. Pho's work is also on display in the Renwick Gallery collection at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City.
